Miles Kunze has been a research assistant at the Technical University of Ilmenau in Germany since 2021. He received his BSc and MSc at the Technical University of Ilmenau, dealing with tire emission measurements and the analysis of the particle flow around a tire. His research topics are now related to CFD simulations of particle flows in the circumference of a vehicle and the particle distribution of vehicle-related emissions in the environment.

Tire emissions – how brake particles influence the measurements

There are various influencing parameters that must be taken into consideration when measuring non-exhaust emissions. Therefore, measured data must be treated carefully regarding aerosol composition and emission sources to clarify emission behavior in different driving situations. This study highlights the difficulties and issues when measuring tire and road wear particles (TRWP), comparing the emissions from the front and rear axles. In this case, brake particles become one of the strongest influencing parameters that must be taken into consideration for analyzing the emission behavior.
