Selected natural silicates: Approach for sustainable innovation
05 Mar 2026
Room 2
Materials, chemicals and related processes – developments and innovations - session 3
The presentation will focus on dry extracted silicates for use in innerliners, partly replacing carbon black. These offer improved bladder shaping in vulcanization process (up to 10% longer bladder life), lower throughput of the innerliner compound into carcass (up to 30%) and lower gas permeability (up to 15%). Dry extracted silicates are refined silicate with very small primary particle size particles for rubberizing compounds (steel). They replace the chemical bond by physical attraction between smooth surfaces, resulting in improved adhesion of green (unvulcanized) rubber to steel (wire/cord) and a lower ratio of visible wire/cord, leading to improved stability of the green tire. Dry extracted silicates enable a high potential for cost saving and process improvement, combined with a positive ecological impact.
Characteristic of natural silicates, key factors in use for tire compounds
Production technology of natural silicates, dry and wet extraction process
The way that alternative functional fillers and additives can improve process parameters in tire confection and vulcanization
Local, natural products produced in sustainable way improve the CO2 footprint. Natural silicates are also low-price products
Cost saving in primary material costs. Cost saving in secondary process costs, especially in highly automatized production processes
