Repositioning retreading through data, service architecture and traceable circularity

Data and digitization throughout the tire value chain
Retreading remains under utilized in Europe and North America, despite substantial advances in casing design, tread compounds and retread manufacturing processes. In the commercial vehicle segment, its adoption is declining in favor of low-cost new tires – driven by purchasing simplicity and short-term economics, rather than long-term performance or sustainability. This presentation proposes a framework to reposition retreading as a strategic component within data-enabled Tire as a Service (TaaS) models. When integrated with connected tire technologies, retreading gains quantifiable value through lifecycle data: rolling resistance, wear rates, casing retention metrics and total cost per kilometer. By embedding sensors or deriving proxy metrics through inspection and tracking systems, it becomes possible to establish a data loop that supports retreadability decisions, casing asset management and sustainability reporting (e.g. CO₂/km). This presentation will explore how the combination of TaaS models and connected tire data can rescue the strategic value of retreading, reduce market commoditization and deliver sustainable, profitable outcomes for fleets and tire providers alike.
