Strategies to decarbonize and to enable circularity rely on trustworthy, traceable, low-carbon circular supply chains with real, measurable content, which should become the standard. What are the solutions to achieve this objective? Different approaches are available and should be pursued simultaneously, depending on specific raw materials, including mass balance methods under strict connectivity and measurement criteria. As a segregated pathway, BioButterfly technology developed by Michelin, IFPEN and Axens, converts renewable ethanol into full sustainable butadiene. Validated at demo scale with favorable LCA and tire demonstrators using 100% bio-butadiene, the technology is ready for the first Axens-licensed commercial unit.
