Building a sustainable tire industry – advances and initiatives - session 3
Functional fillers represent approximately 30wt% of tires and consist primarily of carbon black and silica. These highly CO2-intensive materials have been used by the tire industry for more than 100 years. In contrast, UPM BioMotion Renewable Functional Fillers (RFF) are bio-based, feature a negative carbon footprint from cradle to gate considering biogenic carbon and green electricity, and thus enable tire manufacturers to meet future sustainability requirements. Nokian Tyres’ Green Step Ligna concept tire is the world’s first to apply UPM BioMotion RFF. By replacing all fossil carbon black in the tire’s sidewall, the renewable and recycled content could be increased to 60wt%.
UPM BioMotion RFF is produced on an industrial scale in Leuna, Germany, using sustainably sourced hardwood
UPM BioMotion RFF is a renewable alternative to traditional carbon black for tire applications
UPM BioMotion RFF offers great potential for more sustainable tires.
UPM BioMotion RFF is a highly relevant component on the path toward sustainable mobility
