Jukka Koskinen is a R&D professional with over 15 years of experience in rubber industry. He holds a master’s degree in material science from Tampere University of Technology. He is currently working as a doctoral researcher in Tampere University, and he is specialized in sustainable fillers. Currently he is working with lignin, with a particular focus on enhancing the dispersion of lignin within rubber matrix.

Presentation

Improving lignin dispersion to release its reinforcing potential

Lignin has a potential to act as a reinforcing filler in rubbers and replace carbon black and silica as a sustainable alternative. Typically, the poor dispersion of lignin has hindered the reinforcing properties, however the results from the latest studies show that the dispersion can be improved with optimal mixing parameters and by choosing correct silanes. A novel method is used to measure and quantitatively analyze the dispersion of lignin.
